In Kota, a boy named Satyendra Dubey (Sattu) (Snigdhadeep Chatterjee) lives in a rented house and is doing his coaching to crack the engineering entrance exam. Sattu has been studying in Kota for 4 years trying to crack the Engineering entrance exam, so he can get his own ticket to a good job and a secure future.After his coaching, he returns back to his house in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh where he lives with his parents, elder sister - Nupur Dubey (Shreya Dhanwanthary), Father Yogesh (Nawal Shukla), mother (Anita Sahgal) and grandmother.
Yogesh is an extremely micromanaging kind of person and wants to live his own dreams and aspirations through the life of Sattu. Nupur asks Yogesh to ease up a little, but Yogesh is adamant that a good life costs money, and the engineering seat is the only route to that. Sattu is under a lot of pressure as Yogesh has already spent Rs 5.75 Lakhs on his education and Sattu even contemplates suicide if he is not selected.
The day of the entrance exam comes and Sattu writes his paper well. When the results are out, Sattu ranks 287. While at a theatre, Sattu and his friends are told to move to the lower seats by some corrupt politicians. There is one more man who is asked to do the same, but he refuses and fights with the goons and gets them arrested by the Police. He is Rakesh Singh (Emraan Hashmi).
Rakesh visits Sattu's house and takes him to a tea stall where they both talk for a while and Rakesh gives his contact number to him. Bablu (Manuj Sharma) is Rakesh's friend who helps him scout for needy students and clients who can pay for their services. Clients pay Rakesh Rs 5 Lakhs per selection.
The next day, Sattu calls Rakesh at a restaurant where Rakesh gives him an offer (in which if Sattu gives the exams of some rich candidates who just want admission in a college), he will be rewarded Rs 50,000 per student.Sattu agrees and starts giving exams and earns a lot of money for his family. He does this because his father took a hefty loan for his studies, and Sattu feels it's his responsibility to help his dad in the domestic responsibilities such as the marriage of his sister and the medical expenses of his mother, who needs treatment. Sattu figures that he will get a good job eventually, but that will take 4 years, and he needs the money now.
Rakesh visits Sattu's house and he and Sattu's sister take a liking to each other. Rakesh doesn't reveal to Nupur that he is not single and keeps leading her on. Rakesh tells Yogesh that Sattu is getting paid for doing advertisements for famous coaching centers and taking classes for them.
Rakesh even has a tie up with local coaching centers, where they deliberately push rich kids to the back benches, and then they are approached by Bablu who offers a guaranteed selection in exchange for money. But sometimes this goes wrong when a student relegated to the back bench commits suicide.
When Sattu goes for higher level exams to places like Kolkata and Mumbai, he has sex with prostitutes. In the meanwhile, Rakesh goes to his house where his own sister is getting married. In Rakesh's house, he is subject to same pressure from his dad, about not studying when he was young and thus not having a "respectable" career with a "coaching center".
Meanwhile Sattu is rusticated from his college because he was caught giving someone else's exam in Kolkata. Sattu is arrested and has to be released on bail. Rakesh finds that Sattu got addicted to drugs in college due to the pressure of his own studies and keeping up with the fake exam schedule provided by Rakesh.After Sattu recovers, Rakesh hands him the latter's degree certificate and asks him to go to Qatar, UAE for job. Nupur is super angry with Rakesh when he tells her that he is married to wife (Shivani Bedi). After this Rakesh cuts off all contact with Sattu and his family.
But when Sattu goes offline, one of the parents who had paid Rakesh money for a seat for his child, is left behind as Sattu is unable to give his exam. This guy complains to the police and in a raid, police find a mountain of cash at Rakesh's home. Rakesh is released at the intervention of a local MP Vaidhya (Mahesh Chandra Deva), who wants to open a college in partnership with Rakesh.
After a few years, Rakesh reunites with Sattu's elder sister Nupur Dubey. They have a good time until a twist takes place in their lives. One day, Nupur tells him that she wants to do MBA. in order to get promoted to a higher post. Rakesh gets the MBA through his contacts and then gets paper solved by some of his students and calls Nupur to her office's parking area.
When Rakesh reaches there and tells Nupur that he has got the paper leaked, camera flashes on his face, all the vehicles' headlights turn on and the police inspector arrests him for leaking the paper. In flashback it is revealed that Sattu was fired off from his job as his degree was just a Photoshop certificate with just his name (created by Rakesh to get him out of the exams and rustication load).Sattu attempted suicide due to the public shame and embarrassment caused to his family.
Back in the present time Nupur had taken revenge for her brother's suicide. After being bailed from jail, Rakesh builds an engineering college on his father's name which runs successfully.
