Mary Franklin supports her family, as a hostess in "Fence" McGee's cafe, by lifting jewelry from her dancing partners. Her boyfriend, Billy Anderson, who has invented a washing machine, inspires her to go straight. Billy is framed by McGee, however, and McGee's wife suggests that Mary has been untrue. McGee explains everything in a last-minute confession, and the lovers are reunited after escaping from a burning building.—AFI
