Captain Ranveer Singh Rana (Sharman Joshi) is Indian Army. Captain Quershi (Javed Jaffrey) is Pakistan Army. They are both stationed in the border outpost on Indo Pakistan border in Rajasthan. Both captains keep back channels open & play a game of cards in secret at night (across the fence, no less) & generally share a good bonhomie.Rut Dutta (Soha Ali Khan) is a journalist with a TV station who has been summoned by the Defense Minster of India (Dalip Tahil). He tells Rut that Pakistan is going to declare war on India in 48 hrs & he wants Rut to go to the border to create a patriotic video to motivate the troops & he wants the video to be aired only after war is declared. He also says that China is going nuke India once Pakistan goes to war with India.
Meanwhile in Pakistan, Defence Minister of Pakistan (Dalip Tahil), gets every assurance from his Chinese counterpart (Dalip Tahul) about support for the war with India. Pakistani General (Manoj Pahwa) laments the lack of food for his army to wage war, & the Chinese agree to provide that as well.
Commander Khan (Sanjai Mishra) is Qureshi's commanding officer at the border & asks his company to prepare for battle in 48 hrs. Meanwhile the Defense Minister of US is selling arms to India & is also selling arms to Pakistan without telling each other. He wants profits from India & a free air base in Pakistan.
Rut reaches the border & is amazed at the gentle prodding going on between Qureshi & Rana. Rana firmly believes that this gentle needling is much better than all out war. Rut & Rana fall for each other, but through binoculars Qureshi also sees Rut & falls for her.
Rana & Qureshi engage in a game on Antakshari over loudspeakers to fight for Rut's affections. Rut finally reveals to Rana that Pakistan will declare war & only 4 hrs are left. She pleads with Rana to somehow stop the bloodshed.At the appointed time, the Pakistani General calls commander Khan & asks him to attack the Indian outpost, which he does promptly. Qureshi & Rana do their best to keep up the charade of firing & war while trying to avoid harm & bloodshed. The Defence Minister of Pakistan dispatches the nuclear warhead to the border, to Khan & Qureshi's outpost for detonation. Pakistani's want the nuclear weapon to go off before the morning.
Rut decides to take initiative & wants to visit the Pak outpost for her story. Rana contacts Qureshi & arranges the visit. Qureshi distracts Khan & smuggles Rana & Rut inside the camp, where Rut gets to meet the entire regiment & films their views about the war. Rut & Rana return to the Indian outpost. Rut shows the video to the India regiment & they agree to ceasefire. But the nuclear weapon is still on its way to the border.Rut airs the report on air that turns the public sentiment against the war. This puts pressure on the Indian, Chinese & US leadership to stop the war. US cancels the arms deal with India and Pakistan, while Chine withdraws the nuclear weapon. The war comes to an end.
