A young man motivated by faith and love pushes through despair to save his friends, and possibly, the world.
After awakening to a new life, Matthew finds himself surrounded by friends ready to fight the forces of evil. Unaware of the dangers that await them, they find themselves in many breathtaking situations and swallowed by the very darkness they want to destroy.—Matthew Carter
Matthew and his friends head home after a huge battle with evil. He and his friends begin to discuss what they just encountered, attempting to make sense out of the situation. As they talk about everything, they notice the landscape changing from bad to good. Sonya realizes they were in a different realm and tries to explain it. Derrick and Sonya have serious tension between each other and begin to argue. Matthew does what he can to settle the dispute between the two and then asks Sonya to take him home to check on his mom after what they have seen.
Matthew then falls asleep and has a dream about his cousin Eli who was paralyzed. In the dream Eli tells Matthew he can walk again, and that he's no longer in pain. Matthew seems confused about everything, even the fact that his cousin was trying to apologize. Matthew lets his cousin know that everything is OK and then wakes up just as the sun is rising.Sonya and Derrick are arguing once again and Sonya dares Derrick to speak threatening to leave him stranded. After a few awkward moments, Sonya gets the address where Derrick lives so she can drop him off and get him out of her car. After arriving at his home, Derrick gets out and slams the car door before going into his apartment. Sonya scolds him again, be ignores her, and slams his apartment door.
After the fiasco with Derrick, Sonya brings Matthew to his mothers' home, but no one is there. Matthew panics at first, and then realizes the time, and asks Sonya to drop him off at his cousins' house where she should be. Upon arriving at his cousins' home, Matthew notices an ambulance and his sister crying. Matthew then realizes that his cousin Eli has died, and his mother and sister are trying to process the death of a close family member. Matthew then consoles his sister and then his mom before given time to have a moment with his cousin before the police arrive.
While speaking with his cousin, Eli speaks with Matthew in spirit form. After conversing and finding peace, Eli turns into a ball of light and resides in the heart of Matthew. The police then arrive and Matthew leaves to console his family. The police reassure Kimberly things will be OK and she returns to give him a bath before the coroner arrives like she initially prepared herself to do upon coming to the house. Matthew heads outside with his sister realizing they now must prepare for another funeral. He then hears the words, "Peace be still" and tries to relax in the moment of what's happening.
We are taken to the past, to the year 1985. Matthew and his siblings are getting ready for school and his mother is getting ready for work and taking her youngest to daycare. As they ride their bikes to school Kimberly has a flashback to when Lee was attacking her in front of a 2-year-old Matthew, and Matthew breaks a bottle across Lee's head. Shocked at what happens, Lee stops attacking Kimberly and then heads to clean up. Kimberly puts her son to bed and looks at him mysteriously. She snaps out of her flashback and watches her kids ride their bikes to school still in awe after 3 years.
Upon getting to school, Matthew is confronted by a 3rd-grade Caucasian boy who calls him a n*****, throws him in the dirt, and takes his bike. Matthew gets up from the ground and heads to his kindergarten class. He teacher sees him crying and brings him into class. She sends him to clean up a little and then take his seat. Matthew then finds himself smiling and talking with a classmate he has a crush on, and it makes him feel better.
After class, Matthew meets up with his brother Junior who asks him about not having his bike. Matthew explains how it was stolen by a white boy in a higher grade. Junior puts him on the handlebars so they can head home, but Matthew begins to complain after a while of riding. They end up running into the boy who stole Matts bike, and his older brother attempts to take Juniors. The older brother begins to fight Junior and the younger one is fighting Matthew. Junior looks at Matthew with a look that causes Matthew to fight harder. He gets his bicycle back and the two white boys run away. As they run off Junior picks up a rock and throws it at the boys. The rock hits the oldest boy and when Junior and Matt see all the blood, they hurry home.
After getting home, Elaine becomes curious about what is going on. After they explain to her what happened, she says she won't tell on them, so they don't have to worry about getting into trouble. When Kimberly gets home, Elaine keeps her promise, and the boys help bring the bags into the house. Kimberly sends Jane to wash up and cook's dinner. Later that evening, someone knocks on the door. It's the mother of the kids who attacked Matthew and Junior. Kimberly goes off on the rude lady, which scared her and caused her to check her attitude. The lady then again tries to talk to Kimberly, but Kimberly is not interested after hearing her child being called a n*****. Kimberly goes off on the lady again and sends the family on their way before she gets physical. Shocked they are not in trouble, Matthew and his brother head back in the house and prepare for bed.
We return to the present and find Matthew and his mother leaving his aunt's funeral after watching her get buried. After getting home, Kimberly starts to pull out pictures and documents to start planning Eli's funeral. Matthew tries to help his mother with the arrangements, but she is not very receptive. She does inquire about his job and Matthew gets curious himself, so he calls Sonya. He tells his mother he will be back, but he gets a little concerned after she responds out of character. Sonya arrives and drives away with Matthew after a somewhat intense moment.
Sonya and Matthew arrive at a secret spot in the forest and engage in conversation about his ability to transform. Sonya puts a barrier to protect them from potential attacks as she prepares to take Matthew on a magickal journey. Sonya becomes a little confused when she notices how her book responds to Matthew. She then cast a spell that takes her into Matthew's mind.
Upon entering his mind, Matthew appears, shocking Sonya. After coming to an understanding of how he's able to be there, they begin the journey to unlock what's keeping Matthew from transforming and bond in the process. They begin to explore memories one at a time and as they confront these memories, they change from dark to light. When they encounter the last memory, they notice how it is barricaded, and Matthew has a breakdown. Finally understanding what is stopping Matthew from changing, Sonya breaks it down and their moods are lifted. The barrier is destroyed and the two are returned back to the physical world and Matthew is in his angel form. He returns normal and takes notice of a missed call from Derrick. He returns the call and Derrick reveals that he needs a place to stay because he is being put out. Matthew welcomes him to move in and heads home and wait for him.
Derrick arrives, but Matthew is unaware of the passion. Unknowingly he invites the evil in his home. He then heads to bed and gives Derrick free range to get comfortable and settled in. Derrick seems to be irritated by the sage in the air and almost gags. A few days pass and Matthew makes a few calls after waking up. He has not seen Derrick during that much or at all but still heads over to pick up Keyon and head over to Sonya's house. Keyon shares how he wants to be more helpful and Sonya cast a spell that gives him heightened abilities. Matthew then reveals a secret he has been keeping from them, that he has been diagnosed with HIV, only to find out his friends only pass judgment of being angry that he was afraid to tell them. They agree to tell Derrick together and make plans to visit him where he has been spending most of his time.
After arriving at Aaliyah's house, Matthew and Keyon head inside the house while Sonya stays in the car. After getting inside Matthew joins a few friends and others at the party, while Keyon looks for Derrick. Before finding him, he has a few moments as a result of the spell Sonya cast, but he ignores it. Keyon finds Derrick and has a hard time getting into the room. After finally getting the door open, He finds Derrick in the bed. They exchange words that really mess with Keyon's head and breaking his focus. Derrick leaves the room and then eventually leaves the apartment without speaking to anyone. Keyon comes up still shaken up from being verbally ripped apart by Derrick. Matthew notices and goes over to comfort him before heading outside to find Derrick and question him about what happened.
Matthew searches outside and finally comes across Derrick who he thinks is hiding in the dark. After revealing he wasn't hiding, Derrick decides to reveal his true colors and he and Matthew get into an argument. Derrick begins to say very nasty things while revealing he was aware that Matthew had HIV. Matthew begins to really breakdown and is confused about why his friend would lash out at him the way he was. After putting Matthew in a state of distress, Derrick pulls out a blade and slashes Matthew across the neck. He misses the jugular vein by a hair because Keyon screams as he and Sonya arrive just in time.
Matthew snaps out of the daze he was put in and notices the dark entity that is possessing his friend. He then begins to regain his courage and confronts the demon within. Matthew then transforms into his angel form and enters the spiritual realm to fight Apollyon. After finally destroying the demon, Matthew returns to the physical world and it is as though time itself had stopped. Derrick collapses in the spot he was standing in and Keyon rushes over to check on Derrick. Matthew asks Sonya to tell Aaliyah to call the ambulance and stays with Keyon to help him get it together.
The next day Derrick wakes up in the hospital and begins to apologize for his actions. He reveals how he was able to see everything going on but unable to have any control of his body. Derrick then shares that the fight is not over, because Legion was going to probably attack soon. Derrick then begins to get angry and reveals side effects from the rituals Apollyon had done while possessing him. Everyone seems to be able to see the dark essence except Keyon. After finally calming Derrick, the gang connects and begins speaking of being a team to fight the evil together. Derrick is soon released, and they all leave the hospital together.Lucifer decides to pay Legion a visit and scolds him on his performance. She also makes him aware of Apollyon's fate. Being that she is determined to obtain her prize she agrees to lend her aid to Legion to ensure his victory, especially after witnessing the demise of her subject for herself.
Matthew decides to pay his mom a visit and notices she is very depressed. He notices the demon hovering over her and makes up a reason to go into the back of the house where he calls Derrick. Upon telling Derrick what is going on with his mom, Derrick gets worked up and finds himself teleported to the room Matthew is in. They are both stunned and almost scream but catch themselves, so they do not alert his mother or the demon possessing her. Matthew continues to question Derrick about the demon since he knows more about Legion than the rest of the gang, and they can determine that it is not one of Legion's demons. Derrick then encourages Matthew to transform from the back room and phase through the walls to kill the demon, by catching it off guard.
Matthew tries but is unsuccessful. The demon takes notice of him and smiles. Matthew them heads back to the room and returns to the physical world. He updates Derrick about what happened, and Derrick suggests Matthew calls Sonya since she is more familiar with supernatural abilities. Sonya advises him of the type of demon it is and how to kill it. Matthew then goes back into the living room with his mother and finds a way to bring her out of despair with positive memories. After finally lifting her spirits and reminding her of who she is, the demon is finally destroyed. Kimberly is then urged to watch one of her favorite TV shows and Matthew heads to the back room.
After a few minutes, Kimberly begins to head to the backroom to ask Matthew if he wanted anything, and both he and Derrick begin to panic with how they are going to explain Derrick is there. Derrick then teleports away and ends up calling Matthew after he speaks with his mother. She is back to herself, but Matthew is confused and calls a meeting for everyone to meet, but Derrick wants to be the one to share the news of what happened. Matthew agrees and makes his way over to Aaliyah's house where Derrick is now staying.
Upon arriving at the apartment, Matthew notices Sonya's car outside and then gets a call from his godmother Andrea, who has been suspecting something was wrong. After assuring her everything was okay, Matthew heads toward the apartment. He is met by Derrick at the door who rushes him into the apartment. Derrick makes himself a drink and seems to have a hard time telling everyone what happened at Matthew's mother's house. Matthew decides to fill everyone in, and Sonya begins to feel like it's a waste of her time until he tells her how Derrick arrived. The gang becomes nervous a little but not too concerned. Keyon also assures there is no demonic possession within Derrick because of his newfound power to sense demons.
Confused and unaware of Keyon's ability, Derrick tries to convince Matthew to transform and fight, but he is quickly brought up to speed. Derrick then adds to the story with what happened to the demon Matthew tried to kill that was latched to his mother. As he explains the story, he begins to create the same abyss he did before, giving everyone a personal demonstration of what happened. Sonya begins to investigate what may be happening and shares that Derrick may have newfound abilities now because of the ritual he had to go through with Apollyon. After finally pulling it together and showing off who has the best ability between Derrick and Keyon, they start making plans to attack Legion. Keyon gets a feeling out of nowhere that a demon is near. Sonya gets confused because she put up a barrier, so Keyon decides to sense out the demon. He sees something that frightens him and causes him to stop locating the danger. He tries again, but whatever he was sensing seems to have disappeared.
Lucifer turns out to be the danger but cloaks herself and retreats further away to prevent being detected again. The gang decides to attack Legion on the next Sunday and agree to practice guaranteeing their victory. After days of practicing the team heads to the church. Before getting there, Sonya cloaks them to prevent any detection, especially after what happened at the apartment. They notice there are only a few cars in the lot that seem to belong to the Stuarts and Legion who is disguised as a pastor. As they enter the church, they notice how empty it is, and plan for a quick battle so they can leave before anyone arrives.
As they execute their plan, Matthew heads to the restroom in the hallway area. After getting inside, he shifts into the spirit realm and transforms into War-Angel. After entering the pastor's study, he notices the office is empty and phases back into the restroom and back into the physical realm. As he leaves the restroom, he notices someone at the end of the hall who looks at him and smiles. Sensing an eerie vibe, Matthew decides to alert his friends that something is off. As they try to figure out what is going on, Legion makes himself known and makes them aware that they are the ones caught in a trap. Legion then opens his arms to fill the sanctuary with demons that begin to attack the group of friends. As they defend themselves and keep the demons at bay, Legion attacks verbally attempting to weaken their mind. Trying to ward off the attack so he does not become a victim like before, Matthew still finds himself giving in to anger and lashing out toward Legion. Sonya attempts to stop Matthew from falling into the trap, but she fails.
As Matthew gets closer to Legion, Legion releases more demons that swallow Matthew into darkness. Matthew finds himself winning the battle but is exhausted and passes out. Lucifer appears and projects herself into his mind to attack him further so she can destroy and claim her prize. After a while, Matthew realizes where he is and takes control of the dream world. He transforms into a gargoyle and puts out Lucifer's flames and he pounds her into the ground. She then changes her strategy and attacks him where it hurts by making him feel responsible for the death of his ex. After a while of breaking Matthew down, Lucifer is prepared to make her final attack, but Matthew is saved by the very ex that Lucifer tried to accuse Matthew of being responsible for being dead. Veronica, Matthew's ex, brings peace back to his heart and he can ward off most of the darkness with her help. She fades away after sharing she is at peace if he stops blaming himself for her demise.
Taking notice of how hard his friends are fighting for their life Matthew draws enough strength to yell and send out a shockwave that knocks the smile off Legions face. Legion is unaware of the true battle between Lucifer and Matthew and thinks he is a gift to destroy to prove himself to her. Legion then plans to make a final blow but is caught off guard once again and the entire building shakes. The doors of the sanctuary open and his godmother appears reciting scripture that prove to be the reason the walls were shaking. She looks over toward Matthew and encourages him to recite scriptures, and Matthew does just that while having faith in every word. Angels and loved ones appear around him that rejuvenates him, giving him the strength, he needs to destroy Legion but sparing the person possessed. Everyone is unaware of one of Legion's demons that is hiding in the dark, and it disappears before being detected.
Andrea introduces herself, and they all have a moment. Derrick teleports the injured man to the hospital as they all witness the sanctuary transforming into a rundown building that was cloaked by a glamour. Everyone chats and find humor at the moment to calm down after a hard fight and getting told off by Andrea, who leaves the team inside the building. Derrick teleports back in startling everyone, who startles him and then laugh about the situation. Matthew then asks Sonya to drop him off at his father's house to enjoy a little time together, and she agrees. When Lee heads into the house Matthew notices Veronica across the street watching him. She waves and smiles, and he waves back at her while hearing the whisper and recognizes it was her voice the entire time saying, "Peace be still."
Meanwhile, on the west coast, an injured Apophis crawls through a cavern towards a serpent-like being who happens to be Lilith. He tells her that Adams's lineage still lives. She embraces him and provides a resting place for him in her bosom as she thanks him for the information.
