Based on the novel "La maja desnuda" (1906) by Spanish writer Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, the films tells the story of the rise and fall of a painter (Eizo) who he finds himself torn between the love of two women (Shizuko and Mariko) and the pursuit of ideal beauty.—David R. George, Jr.
