Marcel is a Polish resistance fighter sentenced to death by communist authorities. When he escapes from prison, the only person he can stay at is Anna, his wartime lover.

Nurse Anna meets her wartime lover Marcel in 1950. Learning that he has been sentenced to death for being a member of the Home Army, she starts hiding him in her cellar. During the long 6 years, she gets pregnant with his child. Despite the hardships and gossip she holds much better than he does.
