An interstellar robot is stolen by the mysterious Leo Perlstein. College student Ben Samahon teams up with others linked with the robot's past to reacquire it before Leo obtains its unique power.
Six years on, Ben Samahon unearths MiP, a cosmic automaton once wielded by a youthful Jason Wexler. While pursuing his geology vlog, he unearths a microchip nestled within the robot's form. Joined by his roommate Andrea, Ben reignites MiP after a five-year hibernation, revealing a log of all prior activation dates. The resurgence of the robot's activities comes to the attention of Agent Levy of TLS, a secret shadow organization, including the revelation of a now 18-year-old Jason via his temporal device. Jason promptly notifies his former neighbor, Jason Dichter, to recover the robot. Soon, the highest echelons of TLS command, including Leo Perlstein, are informed of the recent robot activation. With the intention of harnessing MiP's power, Leo dispatches messengers Daniel Novick and Ella Arieli to the robot's location, a move that Ella disapproves of. Dichter arrives at Ben's residence, briefing him and Andrea on MiP's potential dangers, an instruction punctuated by a display of the robot's laser-shooting capabilities. Ben's refusal to surrender MiP culminates in a skirmish that leads to MiP's malfunction, creating havoc in Ben's home. Meanwhile, a mysterious figure, revealed to be Chris Seelig, an old adversary of Jason, enters a college dormitory, causing chaos and noticing the recent incident reported on TV. As the only individual he knows with such power, Chris begins a mental pursuit for Wexler's location. An unexpected twist emerges when MiP is seized by TLS agents Daniel and Ella while Ben and Andrea are asleep at Dichter's home. Ella expresses her displeasure with TLS's recent activities. TLS head Leo receives the robot and engages in a cryptic dialogue with a spectral figure believed to be Jason's deceased brother. At the same time, Jason seeks the services of drug dealer Nicholas Biglin to erase memories of his past. However, the effects of the drugs trigger hallucinations of voices from his past. In his altered state, he is confronted by Chris, who accuses him of causing the recent disaster. Jason denies the accusations, claiming to have lost his powers over the years. Intrigued by Jason's time-travel watch, Dichter suggests a return to 2015 to reclaim their powers to combat Chris, a plan Jason reluctantly agrees to. Meanwhile, Chris, a fugitive from the Golden Guardian prison, offers his assistance to Leo in harnessing MiP's power, an offer Leo apparently accepts. However, upon their arrival in 2015, Jason, Ben, and Dichter encounter a resource crisis that only permits two to return to the present. Dichter gallantly volunteers to stay back. An intriguing revelation emerges when Chris, possessing the ability to detect spectral presences, inadvertently brings back the ghost of Jason's childhood friend Remy Erdman, mistaking it for Jason's late brother. Remy, retaining his former abilities, seeks out Jason to reveal Chris and Leo's alliance. In a twist of fate, Leo reactivates MiP's GPS, leading Jason to his location. In an elaborate ruse, Leo plans to use Jason, Ben, and the recently reemerged Remy to eliminate Chris, underestimating their newfound powers. A subsequent confrontation reveals Leo's possession of MiP's power in serum form, leading to a potent transformation. Ella, disillusioned with Leo, allies herself with Jason's group. A grueling battle ensues, culminating in a mass teleportation caused by a surge in electricity. In a final act of defiance, Ella refills Jason's watch with plutonium. Jason discovers an unread message from Dichter from six years ago, detailing a timer installed in the watch. Following Dichter's instructions, Jason, Ben, and Ella collaborate to attach the watch to Leo, sending him back in time. In the aftermath, Ben reveals on his YouTube channel the acquisition of a new watch, Jason's old timepiece, while Jason works on a replacement, with a powerless MiP as his silent companion. Signaling a sentimental journey, Jason announces his intention to visit "one more person" before vanishing to his old home.—Team
