Anna is nervous when she and her son, Tomas, arrive in the small, close-knit community of Igloolik, in the Canadian Arctic. Anna had a short-lived affair with Tomas's Inuk father when she worked in Igloolik. But Tomas, now 14 years old, was born and raised in his mother's native city of Montreal and never knew much about his origins. Tomas is bright, strong and curious about his father's culture, but his father is no longer around to show him the way. For his mother and Inuit family, the joy of homecoming is mixed with memories of a brief and painful chapter in their shared history. Following the death of his father Caleb, fourteen year old Tomas and his Caucasian mother Anna travel from their home in Montréal to the Canadian North for Tomas to meet his Inuit paternal relations for the first time, that side of his heritage about which he knows virtually nothing. They are generally welcomed by Caleb's family, which includes Tomas' older half brother Travis, although Anna has a difficult initial encounter with Travis' mother, Sheba. While Tomas gets to know this side of his life, both he and Anna have to come to grips with the entire issue of Caleb, and the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death. Anna also has to come to some decisions behind the real reason why they took this trip now, fifteen years after the abrupt circumstance which made her leave in the first place.—Huggo
