A rural community has a new school teacher with socialist leanings.
Munthe has become a rich farmer through his own work and has gained some influence in the local community. He is strongly opposed to the immigration of east European farm labor from Galicia who, he claims, makes life difficult for the locals. A new school teacher with socialist leanings arrive and Munthe's daughter fall in love with him.—Mattias Thuresson
Squire Munthe (Edvard Persson) is the head of a sugar-beet farm at the turn of the century and has to deal with the problems of the farm workers and the imported workers. The squire is tolerant and understanding of the problems---a Swedish version of Will Rogers, or vice versa depending on where you are---and works through all of the problems with humor, wit and a good baritone singing voice. Stina Hedberg plays the squire's wife, and Marianne Gyllenhammar is his daughter, who is in love with schoolteacher Claes Thelander, champion of the farm workers.—Les Adams <[email protected]>
