Two workaholic spouses, one a realtor and the other a high-priced lawyer, find themselves at odds with one another after one of them enters into a secretive love affair.
On the surface, Meg and Tom Davidson are in a happy marriage. There is, however, an underlying tension between the two because of Meg's part-time job as a real estate agent, which was originally only supposed to fill in her down time as a stay-at-home mom caring for their infant daughter, Ellie. Because of how successful she is at her job, Meg, on the urging of her boss George, is contemplating taking the broker's course and getting her broker's license, leading to a full time job. Tom, a lawyer, deep down would rather Meg return to being a full time stay at home mom and wife. What he sees as this neglect is only part of the reason why Tom has embarked on an affair with a younger woman named Lisa Carver. However, Tom, who really does love Meg, decides to break it off with Lisa. Lisa does not take this news well. Although Tom is aware of the telephone calls and other attempts she makes to contact him, he is unaware that Lisa is emotionally unstable, as she will do whatever she needs to to get Tom back. Stevie, Lisa's lowlife of a former boyfriend, decides to help Lisa get back at Tom in an effort for him to get Lisa back, which includes using violent tactics. He does so despite knowing Lisa will lie to get what she wants. Meanwhile, Meg comes to realization that Tom is hiding things from her, the extent of those secrets which she is unaware. She is also unaware that Tom's actions not only may break up their marriage but puts Tom and her life in danger.—Huggo
The Davis marriage is in trouble. Meg (Justine Bateman) thought she would never become anything else apart from a stay-at-home mom, but she's making it big time as a realtor. The long hours, the high stress, and the interest of her boss George (Michael Daingerfield) at Cartel Real Estate makes her reckless concerning her family. That puts pressure on Tom (Sebastian Spence), who has a lover, a young lady twenty years his younger. This girl, Lisa (Jessica Lowndes), has got a job cleaning offices, but she's usually late, as she's quite a party girl. She has an argument with her boss McNary (Christine Willes) about it, and Lisa quits on the spot before McNary can fire her. She had got an overdue notice that very same morning, and she says that she can't even pay her rent, so that she will not cry about the loss of such a crappy job. That very same day, Tom decides to split up with her, as he wants to concentrate on saving his marriage and his relationship with his daughter Ellie (Haley Guiel). Lisa gets frantic, kneels down and begs him to stay. Tom rejects her the hard way, and leaves for good. George admits he is surprised that Meg is so good at his job, and he talks to her about her preparing for the realty agent examinations, which she proudly considers, although Tom is not too happy about it, as that would make her even busier. In fact, it looks like that his involvement with Lisa is what made him jealous about Meg and George, as though he thought -"If I'm being unfaithful, she may be unfaithful as well." Lisa is so busy that she has to run to the office in the middle of the night because a high-power couple, the Corellis (Derek Green & Debra Donohue) want to make the decision of buying a mansion before going abroad on a business trip. Tom is really pissed off that Lisa has to leave at night to prepare all the documents before the Corellis leave. It's implied that Meg's commission would be huge.
Tom tries to compensate Meg for everything, bringing her flowers all the time. The following morning, it's Meg who takes breakfast to bed, as it's their wedding anniversary. Tom says he'll give her her present later on. Meanwhile, Lisa takes things the hard way. She goes to one of her ex-boyfriend's, a young man called Stevie (Derek Hamilton), who lends her the money to pay her rent, as he wants to come back with her. He had been after her for quite some time, telling her that Tom isn't really in love with her, which she didn't want to believe. Lisa can't get over Tom, who she sees as more ambitious and successful than her small-time crook of ex-boyfriend - somebody who's only keen in getting high every day. Lisa navigates Tom's secretary and calls him at work, so that he would finally accept to see her one last time, expecting to lure him with sex. However, Tom's looks interesting in working in his marriage, so he refuses to see her... at first. Then, when they meet, Tom rejects her much more clearly this time. Lisa gets frantic, and she hits herself, giving herself a black eye. As Stevie knows that Lisa and Tom met, he guesses that he's given her the black eye, a belief she encourages, even telling him that she wants to have her own back. Stevie tells Lisa to move and come to live with him.
Meanwhile, Tom and Meg are giving out a party to celebrate their anniversary. Joanie (Kendall Cross), Meg's neighbour and best friend will be there, as George will be as well. Tina (Marsha Regis), the young daughter of another neighbour, also attends, saying that she's utterly happy with her acting career but not with her acting lessons. There's a weird moment when it looks like Tina wants to hit on Tom. He drinks too much, and goes to sleep wasted. Meg finds out about Tom's past infidelities, as one of Tom's friends (Michael Mitchell) says that they didn't visit him from New York last week, they are going to do so next week.
Stevie asks D. K. Renfro (William Stewart) to fight with Tom. He does so, entering the Davis' home in the middle in the night, after a party. As Tom is completely pissed, it's Meg who hears something and fights Stan, who's carrying a baseball bat to hit Tom. She picks up a kitchen knife and kills Stan. Det. Wilson (William MacDonald) and Det. McKenna (Colin Lawrence) think it is a burglary gone awry. After the interrogation, Meg goes back home, but she is suddenly terrified at her own home, and wants to sleep at a hotel. Her friend Joanie offers a shoulder to cry on, and says it's normal that she's nervous, even though the self-defense motif has been clearly established. But Meg can't cope and has to resort to psychotherapy to put back the pieces of her life together. Dr. Sarah Olsted (Donna Yamamoto) tries to make her focus on her own bravery, but it's not working. Meg's performance at work becomes unfocused and chaotic. The secretary (Jenny Mitchell), tries to organize her, telling her about her next appointment, but Meg ends up going to a different for-sale home. George looks sympathetic, and doesn't want to put too much pressure on her, but Meg ends up quitting her job. She doesn't know what else to do. Tom starts taking shooting lessons with an instructor (Mark Gash).
She starts to investigate the case. She gets a photograph of D. K. with Lisa. She becomes obsessed, and asks Allison (Donna White), another bartender, about Lisa - without knowing her name. She even talks to a young lady at a bar (Andrea Morrow) who may look a bit similar to Lisa from behind. She has followed the credit card information for the payment of a bucket of flowers which Tom rejected. Allison tells Stevie, who takes things in her own hands. He'll kill Meg, who's after them, and pin the murder on Tom. Lisa agrees.
The Davis' marriage is on the rocks. Meg has finally faced Tom with proofs of his infidelities, and forces him to go and sleep at a hotel. That night Stevie arrives to kill her, after having killed Lisa after a huge argument - it was all kind of an accident, anyway, as she hit her head after falling down, but it looks like Stevie will have a hard time convincing anybody of his innocence. She he bets everything on getting rid of Meg, the only one who, at that moment, is going after him. Angered and probably a bit tipsy, Tom arrives to his old home and tries to break through the door. Meg phones Wilson, saying that Tom is waiting outside, but that he doesn't look violent anymore. In spite of having calmed himself down, he doesn't want to leave. Meg doesn't want Ellie to notice the horrible situation. She doesn't realise that Stevie is hiding inside the house close to her. When she hangs up, Stevie appears, and tells her that, now that she's called the police, Tom will be accused of her murder.
But Meg fights Stevie. She shoots Stevie.
