On her wedding day, Ning Xiuxiu, the daughter of the wealthiest man in Tianniu-miao Village, is kidnapped by bandits. Her father, Ning Xuexiang, unwilling to sell land for her ransom, marries off her younger sister to Xiuxiu's childhood sweetheart, Fei Wendian. Devastated, Xiuxiu cuts ties with her father and marries a humble farmer, Feng Dajiao. As she learns to work the land, she gradually comes to understand its vital importance to farmers. Inspired by revolutionary ideas from Du Chunlin and others, Xiuxiu uses her knowledge to help her neighbors, leading the village women in breaking free from feudal constraints. Together with the villagers, she fights banditry, resists the Japanese invasion, and supports the military. Through 20 years of hardship and remarkable experiences, Xiuxiu reconciles with her father and fulfills her own sense of purpose.
