Ohio widower Ben Pride moves to Kansas with his parents and children shortly after the Civil War. When they arrive in Lawrence they are harassed by Confederate marauders. Ben falls in love with a local woman who wants to leave town and move back East after the marauders kills her father and Ben's mother when they raid the town. Ben ask her to marry him and they build a new home, but Ben's daughter is not so happen about her new mother in-law.
