Because his finances are low and he is seeking background for a new book, author Tony Barratt and his wife Dora return to his country home in Connecticut. While he is finding material for his book on the lives and customs of the local immigrant tobacco farmers, his wife returns to New York and, alas, his Japanese servant deserts him. He meets neighboring farm girl Manya Novak and hires her to cook his meals and clean his house. In New York, writer Tony Barrett was successful in his first novel, but two failures later he's an alcoholic and his publisher refuses to publish his latest novel. The totally broke Tony is forced to move with his wife Dora to his family's farmhouse in the Connecticut countryside. When they get there, his neighbors, Mr. Jan Novak and his daughter Manya, offer $5000 for his idle lands. Tony accepts the offer and Dora decides to return to New York. Tony stays with his servant Taka and has dinner with the Novak family to close the business. When Taka decides to return to New York, Manya helps Tony with the housekeeping. They become close and soon fall in love. But Tony is a married man and Manya is engaged to Fredrik Sobieski in an arranged marriage.
