After a breakup and a failed exhibition, artist Sarah visits her mom. Her dead grandma's house and the church are to give way to a new mall. Is it too late to save them and for the women to find happiness?

Uninspired and newly single painter Sarah is down on her luck and wants nothing more than to get away from her problems. When she decides to take a trip to visit her mom, she becomes involved in the efforts to save a local church which is in danger of closing down.

When the Robertson family home is likely to be demolished along with the parish church for a development in her native small town, would be-painter, whose self-absorbed indecisiveness just wrecked her relationship with a perfect fiance, she returns home. Pastor Fred reconsiders his lack of ambition to fight for the church, which is the center of the locals' memories, when Sarah resolves to take the lead. Stupidly clashing with the sheriff gets her in contact with ever-helpful town councilor and attorney Roger Waters, who quickly gets a crush on her. Meanwhile her mother Jeannie, who still refuses to abandon the hippie era and her dreams, discovers Larry, the presumed-Vietnam-killed true love she gave up for Sarah's father while being pregnant.
