Luxury yacht Wanderer transports captives in 1858 from the Congo River to Jekyll Island, Georgia and launches a story of slavery, survival, and the strength to prevail.
The Wanderer: A Story of Slavery, Survival, and the Strength to Prevail- Fifty years after Congress declared international slave trading illegal, Savannah slave-owner Charles Lamar embarks on a brazen scheme in 1858 to secretly transport enslaved Africans to Georgia. Acquiring the Wanderer, the fastest sailing ship in the New York Yacht Club, Lamar outfits it as a slaver and then quickly sends the vessel to Africa. Captives are purchased from traders on the Congo River and tightly confined below deck. The group endures unsanitary living conditions and, of the nearly 500 taken, only 409 survive. For the survivors landing on Jekyll Island, Georgia the challenges are just beginning. Uncover the story behind one of the last known slave ships coming to America and discover the distinctive heritage known as Gullah-Geechee culture.
