An overgrown adolescent lives off his mother and leads small-town California teens astray.

Based on the true story of '60s thrill-killer Charles Schmid ("The Pied Piper of Tucson"), Skipper Todd (Robert F. Lyons) is a charismatic 23-year old who charms his way into the lives of high school kids in a small California town. Girls find him attractive and are only too willing to accompany him to a nearby desert area to be his "girl for the night." Not all of them return, however. Featuring Richard Thomas as his loyal hanger-on and a colorful assortment of familiar actors in vivid character roles including Barbara Bel Geddes, Gloria Grahame, Edward Asner, Fay Spain, James Broderick and Michael Conrad.—alfiehitchie

Twenty-three year old aspiring musician Stephen Todd - Skipper to those that know him - leads a relatively idle life, his only source of earned income being in dealing drugs. His somewhat indifferent adoptive mother willingly supports him financially while complains about him not working, yet she will defend him to others. He generally hangs out with a large group of high school teenagers, the girls who idolize him in his confidence, easy-going charm and good looks, he having casual sexual relationships with many of them, while the boys aspire to be him, hanging out with him in the hopes that some of his life will rub off on them. In the latter category includes Billy Roy, a lost soul just released from a stint in reform school. Billy looks to Skipper for guidance in wanting a relationship with Amata with who he is in love, while Amata tolerates Billy only to be closer to Skipper. Even the girls who outwardly are standoffish to Skipper remain in the group again in secretly wanting to be closer to him, most notably sixteen year old Roberta, who, in Skipper's dogged pursuit of her, is ultimately able to admit to him that she is in love with him. Some within this group of teens demonstrate their unconditional loyalty to Skipper in they willingly helping him, in an emotionally detached manner, dispose of the body of fifteen year old Sue-Ellen Mack, who he murdered purely in his idleness giving him much too much time to think about esoteric things in life like what it would feel like to kill someone.—Huggo
