Johnnie Gains, son of a farming couple, is industrious and imbued with a spirit of sacrifice. Rejected for military service because of an eye injury, he enlists in the Salvation Army. His indolent brother marries but is goaded into enlisting and dies on the battlefield. The parents are evicted from their home by the dead son's widow, but Johnnie returns and restores the homestead to them.—AFI
