Marie Bernais possesses a wonderful voice which her father believes is a gift from the devil. Raoul Nieppe loves her, but fears marrying below his social status, and his rejection results in a suicide attempt by Marie.

Living in a small Breton village, Marie Bernais possesses a beautiful singing voice which her puritanical father believes is a gift from the devil. She falls in love with nonconformist minister Raoul Nieppe, but his refusal to marry beneath his station causes her to attempt suicide. Hector Remey, once a popular Parisian tenor, rescues her and helps her become a famous singer. Marie later falls in love with Gaspard Prevost, who is already married. She returns to her native village to sing for the soldiers although she is warned it could ruin her voice. Raoul and her father scorn her and finally convince her of her guilt. She gives up Gaspard, and then realizes that Raoul only wants her for himself. She loses her voice and becomes a humble peasant girl until Gaspard finds her, following his wife's death, and marries her.—mpickfordfan
