A dying gunfighter spends his last days looking for a way to die with a minimum of pain and a maximum of dignity.

John Books an aging gunfighter goes to see a doctor he knows for a second opinion after another doctor told him he has a cancer which is terminal. The doctor confirms what the other said. He says Books has a month maybe two left. He takes a room in the boarding house and the son of the woman who runs it recognizes him and tells his mother who he is. She doesn't like his kind but when he tells her of his condition, she empathizes. Her son wants him to teach him how to use a gun. Books tries to tell him that killing is not something he wants to live with. Books, not wanting to go through the agony of dying from cancer, tries to find a quicker way to go.[email protected]

Carson City, 1901. An aging gunfighter, JB Books (John Wayne), rides into town. His deeds are infamous and, despite his age, he is still feared and, by some, revered. However, Books is dying of cancer and has about two months to live. Initially his thoughts turn to finding a nice quite place where he can die in peace. Soon, however, he hits upon another plan, one befitting his career and involving more dignity and less suffering.—grantss

John Bernard Books, a gunfighter approaching his 58th birthday, finds that he has rectal cancer and two months to live. He takes a room with Bond Rogers and her son, Gillom, to wait until death comes. Of course, his very presence starts off events in the town. The Marshal comes, prepared to die in a shootout, Gillom tries to idolize him, Bond first is disgusted and then pities him.
