Spinster professor Miss Leona takes an interest in Bliss Dawson, a maintenance man. After a successful session fixing her desk lamp, she invites him to spend Saturday doing her odd jobs.
After hiring Bliss Dawson, a maintenance worker at the University she teaches literature at, to do repairs at her home, Professor Leona DeVose and Bliss form a friendship which quickly turns to passion- to the surprise of all the gossips in town, not to mention his wife and young children who eventually find out what's been going on. Bliss's wife at first had happily accepted his time away from home, thinking he would soon be bringing home lots of extra cash as she tends to be shrewish and materialistic-in her husband's eyes, anyway. In the meantime, these two people who seem to have nothing in common, Leona and Bliss, fall deeply in love. Eventually Leona and Bliss decide to marry despite their different backgrounds and the odds against them, but will Bliss really be willing to leave his troubled marriage, and particularly the children he is very attached to? Leona has already jeopardized her careeer, but both are willing to give up all for love it appears. However, a twist of fate and a spurned wife may have different ideas.
