In late-nineteenth-century Zakynthos, against the backdrop of long-established prejudice and ongoing class discrimination between the haughty aristocracy and the humble petite bourgeoisie, the aspiring lawyer, Zepos Pebonaris, falls in love with the pampered daughter of Conte di Maras, Elda.
