To save an old friend's ranch, the Beaudine brothers round up a gang of misfits to drive a huge herd to market. Join the fast and furious action when a stableman, a retired gunslinger, a dried-out drunk and a couple of sneaky rustlers, hit the dusty trail. This band of undesirables is forced to prove their grit as they fight to stay alive against hostile Indians, stampedes, drought, and just plain bad luck on "The Longest Drive." Also starring Dan O'Herlihy and Keenan Wynn.

Kurt Russell stars as a rugged Indian who has journeyed from the reservation to live amongst the white man. After abruptly reuniting with his blood brother (Tim Matheson), they travel to see an old friend. When they discover their old ally has hit upon bad times, the two agree to drive their friend's cattle to market - but what dangers lie ahead on the open trail? Little do the brothers know they have enlisted the help of cattle rustlers to help move the herd. How much blood will be shed and how many lives lost before a halt can be put to the cattle rustlers' evil plan?

The two Beaudine Bothers refuse rancher Hatcher's offer to go on his cattle drive but change their minds when he is shot. So they head out with six other riders, a cook and a recuperating owner heading 1500 cows towards Colorado 1000 miles away. Along the way they will face accidents, Indians, two of the riders aiming to rustle some of Hatcher's cattle and flee, squatters demanding money, a stampede, and a lack of water.
