Posy Pinkerton, traditional and conservative, lacks confidence in many aspects of her life, especially those that place her at the center of attention. She and her physician fiancé Tom don't know how to dance, but she wants to waltz as their first wedding dance in a month's time solely in it being tradition. And as she works toward a career as medical graphic artist, she doesn't yet have the confidence to approach Dr. Stang at Tom's hospital for a job, there where she already practices her art. Two items happen concurrently in her life. First, she recognizes a Jane Doe potential homicide victim at the hospital, the slightly disoriented woman she encountered when she was on her regular morning run in the park with her cousin Laura. As such, Posy and to a lesser extent Laura, who didn't encounter the woman, become material witnesses for lead police investigator, Detective Dagliesh, who is also in association investigating the disappearance of another woman who both Posy and Laura also did encounter in the park that same day. And second, she meets handsome Jack Wickley, who, in town for business, is up front that he is interested in her sexually despite also being up front that he is already married. Posy, who has been visualizing herself as a bolder, more confident person, contemplates having a final fling with Jack before settling into that quiet, and admittedly uninspired life with Tom. What Posy is unaware about is that meeting Jack was not an accident, and is associated to the Jane Doe, Posy who may meet the same fate as her if she takes up with him.—Huggo
