Hugh Coleman, a poor young man, secretly marries Minna Hart, the daughter of a wealthy banker. Hugh attempts to break the news to Minna's father gently by appearing to ask permission to marry her, but before the truth is revealed, the father staunchly forbids the marriage of his Jewish daughter to a Gentile of no means.
