Perumthachan, a legendary carpenter, follows the stringent social norms of his time. However, when Kannan, his son, grows up to rebel against those very norms, Perumthachan must deal with him.

In Kerala Legend, a pious and respected 'Perumthachan' or master carpenter of mixed background, builds temples and statues which is renowned all over kerala. He falls in love with the 'thampurati' of the palace but is able to control himself. Later a son is borne to him who begins to grow more famous than him. he is later commissioned to do the work of the same palace and falls in love with the thampurati's daughter. to prevent a scandal he kills him by dropping a chisel on him.—Anonymous

The beauty of the film lies in the fact that Perunthachan is portrayed as a three dimensional character, of flesh and blood rather than the poetic mythical son in parayi petta panthirukulam. His actions are based upon envy, grief and ego, three concepts which reflect in every Hindu mythological story. The acting of Thilakan is awe inspiring and the movie adds another feather to the mater actor's crown.—Harikrishnan D
