A divorced couple scheme to recover the retirement money that was stolen from them.
Richard (Pierce Brosnan) and Kate (Dame Emma Thompson) are a divorced couple who have an amicable relationship. Richard, who's about to retire, learns that his company's assets have been frozen because it's under investigation, and that includes the pension fund. When the owner goes out of the country, Richard decides to pursue him and Kate goes with him. When they learn the man doesn't care about the employees, they decide to get the money some other way - by stealing the diamond he gave his girlfriend. So they follow them and Kate gets close to the girlfriend.—[email protected]
Richard (Pierce Brosnan) and Kate Jones (Emma Thompson) are divorced with two children Sophie (Tuppence Middleton) and Matt (Jack Wilkinson). They meet at social occasions and while they are friendly to each other, Kate really hates Richard for ruining her for all other men. Richard is charming and witty and still very handsome. In front of Richard, all other men who approach Kate look like bumbling fools.Sophie is going away to college and used to live with Kate. Kate is feeling very lonely & goes on online dating portals for companionship.Both Kate and Richard are restless and feel that something has gone missing from their life.
Richard's company is in talks for take-over by unknown buyers. Doreen (Ellen Thomas) is Richard's secretary. He gets to office once day (one week before the sale date) to find that his company has been locked out by the banks under foreclosure proceedings and the shares in the firm are worthless. The company has many employees who all are dependent on Richard, and he promises that he will get to the bottom of the mess and each employee will get the financial payment that they are due.
Richard turns to Kate for help. Turns out their futures and their kids' education, their mortgages & their pensions were all tied up in the company's shares & somehow the unknown buyers had stripped the firm of all its value and left them with nothing. Richard had the name of the holding company, whose subsidiary bought his firm. But the website of the holding company also required a password to enter the site.
Kate asks Matt to do some hacking & finds that Richard's firm was sold to a corrupt French businessman, Vincent (Laurent Lafitte). Vincent is an international hedge fund manager. Richard begs Kate to come with him as she knows French.They go to Paris and confront Vincent, where Vincent does not deny all the things he did. He refuses to do anything to return the money he had stolen from the firm. Vincent says that none of his actions were illegal, even though he admits that they were immoral. Vincent throws them out of his office.
Richard and Kate plot their plan on how to get their money back. They follow Vincent when he leaves the office in his car. Kate is a fanatical driver and almost destroys the rental in her quest not to lose sight of Vincent's car. This is the first adventure Kate and Richard have had in decades.Richard and Kate check into a budget hotel and are given adjoining rooms.
They find out that Vincent is getting married to his beautiful girlfriend, Manon (Louise Bourgoin). They plan to steal the diamond Vincent gave to Manon, which is worth $10.8 million. Kate knew of the diamond (The Eye of the Rainbow) as it was recently sold at auction to an anonymous buyer, right after Richard's company was foreclosed.This is just as much as the money Vincent stole from them.
Kate gate crashes Manon's hen's party & pretends to be Vincent's cousin twice removed. Kate has to do all the work, while Richard sits at a nearby shack and sips his cocktails. She finds that Manon intends to wear the diamond at the wedding and plans to change it halfway through the events. She also finds that Vincent has invited 2 Texans and their wives (whom they have never even met before) for a business meeting at the wedding & has them staying at the Carlton.Kate befriends Manon when she tells her that falling in love is easy, but liking your spouse is the most difficult part.
They again have Matt hack the Carlton database & find the identities of the 2 Texan couples. So, Richard & Kate plan to kidnap the 4 Texans and take their place. To complete the group, they invite their friends from Kate's neighborhood, Jerry (Timothy Spall) and Penelope (Celia Imrie).Jerry & Pen decide to agree to this scheme & help tie up the Texans in their room at the Carlton. They enter the Texan's suites dressed as butlers and serve them champagne, which was mixed with sedatives. Once the sedatives take effect, they tape the Texans to the chairs in their room.
Jerry procures a gun, and this scares Penelope. But then the girls get excited and want to see the gun. Turns out Penelope is a natural at firearms but fires off an accidental shot at the dinner table which hits a wine barrel. Penelope gets very excited and this spices up her sex life with Jerry.As they prepare to infiltrate the wedding via the sea route, the housekeeping at the Carlton find and rescue the Texans.
As per plan, they infiltrate Manon's chambers & find the diamond there. Manon sees Kate, who again introduces herself as Vincent's cousin & Manon breaks down saying that she doesn't love Vincent. She understands that Vincent has cheated Kate & Richard. She willingly allows Richard to swap the real diamond with the fake.
At the wedding party Manon announces that she wants a divorce. Vincent spots the fake & at that moment the real Texan arrive. Richard & Kate are arrested while Richard had deposited the real diamond in Jerry's pockets. Jerry swallows the diamond to escape the X ray scanners.
Vincent orders Richard & Kate to be thrown off a cliff but Manon saves them. The group re-unites at their rendezvous point in Paris, sells the diamond to a fence. Richard gives the money to Jerry & entrusts him to return the same to his employees back home. He and Kate stay back to explore Europe together.
