The Lincoln Funeral Train in Ohio.

In April and May of 1865, the Lincoln Funeral Train carried Abraham Lincoln's body from Washington DC to its final resting place in Springfield, Illinois. It entered Ohio at the northeast corner of the state, then stopped in Cleveland and Columbus before traveling west through the towns of Piqua and Gettysburg (Ohio) on its way toward Indianapolis. Although the funeral car itself was lost in a fire in the early 1900s and the locomotives have been scrapped, several artifacts from the train still remain in Ohio museums. Most notable of these is a locomotive bell at the Mad River and NKP Railroad Museum in Bellevue. Another notable exhibit is an intricate movable model of the train, carved in ebony and fine ivory, at the Warther Carvings Museum in Dover. This documentary traces the route of the train through Ohio, although some of the original track has been abandoned or lost. The historical background of the Civil War and its effects in Ohio are examined. A replica funeral train was built in 2015, the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's death, and visited some of the same Ohio towns as the original train. Throughout this video, Lincoln's personal character and political positions are illustrated in his own words, re-enacted by Lincoln interpreter Robert Brugler.—yortsnave
