Summaries

Five people are stranded on an island off the coast of Alaska. The poor girl, Bess Gilbert, competes with the rich girl, Lenor Harderworth, for the attentions of the heroic Ned Cornet. A snow-slide resolves a few issues.

Son of wealthy fur dealer Godfrey Cornet, Ned is a society wastrel and is sent by his father to supervise his properties in Alaska. In the group are Bess Gilbert (Cornet's secretary) and Mrs. Hardenworth and her daughter Lenore, who are after the Cornet fortune. During a ship's party, the captain gets drunk and wrecks his ship; the survivors reach a barren island off the coast of Alaska, belonging to Doomsdorf, a Russian who has fled from Siberia, and he makes prisoners of the castaways. Doomsdorf rules with an iron hand, beating Ned twice and threatening Lenore repeatedly, but he is unable to subdue Bess's spirit. Lenore and her mother betray Ned and Bess and escape; meanwhile, Ned, who has developed his strength, lures Doomsdorf into a bear-trap, and Doomsdorf is buried by an avalanche of snow. Ned returns home with Bess as his wife.—Pamela Short
