When Laney Hale (Mia Clarke) has a bike accident while racing the school bully, she has a chance encounter with a mysterious drifter, the Hermit (Charles Auten), and a friendship begins that will change the course of both of their lives. For reasons, at first, he's not ready to share, the Hermit has become so disenchanted with the world around him that he has chosen to remove himself from it. Laney's father Frank Hale (Gray Hawks), the town Sheriff, is an abusive drunk who keeps both her and her mother LeAnne (Terrie Batson) in constant fear of his violent outbursts. Laney, seeking her own escape, is intrigued by the Hermit, and ignores Franks command to stay away from the no good drifter quickly building a bond with the lost soul.
