A witch is put to death in Colonial America, leaving her husband and infant daughter behind. Seventeen years later, the daughter has grown up and stands to inherit money set up by her mother's family. When Morella Lock is accused of witchcraft, the local population blinds and kills her at a stake. However, she promises to return in the body of her baby daughter Lenora. Her beloved husband, the wealthy Gideon Lock, builds a crypt where Morella was murdered and raises her daughter isolated from the village. Seventeen years later, the lawyer Guy visits Gideon, who is blind, expecting to meet Lenora since she will be eighteen soon and she needs to sign documents relative to her inheritance. However, Gideon forbids the lawyer to contact his daughter. But her tutor Coel Deveraux meets Guy in the village and schedules an encounter with Lenora by the lake of her real state.
