After suffering years of psychiatric care as a teenager she desperately wants to prove her experience that ghosts exist. As a 7-year-old, Chantilly could somehow see Stephanie when they visited her family castle with her parents, a soul trapped within the castle boundaries, and they developed a supernatural bond. Unable to forget, Chantilly became obsessed and unwavering on her experience, so reaches out to a TV show called 'The Haunted'. They set out to help her prove ghosts exist, but Eugene the show creator is a fake.
There's an evil tyrant named 'The Duke', who Stephanie banished to a gypsy's magical box, which was bestowed by her soul mate Rene, Stephanie's secret lover, also trapped within the castle boundaries. The Duke has been waiting to escape and exact his vengeance for 400 years, and 'The Haunted' team is his opportunity. As the weekend in the castle progresses, so does a tale of deception, fallacy and murder.
As they get hunted one by one, the only way 'The Haunted' team can get out of this situation is by joining forces with the supernatural, and making a plan to escape with proof, redemption and their lives before it's all too late.
Treatment
Present day Early morning the camera glides above the misty water of pristine lake, a fishing tackle is bobbing up and down. The camera pulls out of to reveal several dismembered bodies of three young men, scattered about a smoldering campfire at their campsite.
During the 1600's midst a 30-year war, an Evil Tyrant named The Duke who fights for no man except himself, ransacks anything in his wake. He invaded Lanquetot castle in Normandy and killed all who lived there. Amongst the dead he found Stephanie, a beautiful 18-year-old girl who was still alive and took her as his prisoner bride. 10 years roll past, and she still remained his prisoner at Lanquetot castle. One hot and sunny day, Stephanie noticed a young farm hand working on the grounds, and so began their passionate and secret love affair. Rene's family background of gypsy's magic and sorcery, lead to a night spelled for disaster. During a loving embrace in the Master Bedroom, Rene unwittingly cast a spell from an enchanted box named 'The Holder' which bonded their souls in life and death for eternity. The box contained 2 rings which he placed on their fingers, and a dagger to seal it in blood.
The Duke returned early wielding a bloody axed, and caught the two lovers together. In a fit of rage, he threw an axed into Rene's shoulder and stabbed Stephanie to death. Realising Rene was still alive, the Duke pulled out the axed to finish him but slipped on Rene's blood. Still holding the magical dagger, Rene plunged the dagger into the Dukes heart.
Rene and Stephanie appeared overlooking their mutilated bodies, somehow the spell and the box had trapped their souls within the castle boundaries. Shocked and confused by the situation, Stephanie then noticed the Dukes spirit begin to appear as well as resisting being drawn into the box. They quickly managed to trap the Dukes spirit in 'The Holder' before he manifested as a ghost to exact his revenge.
400 years later, a young girl visited her families castle in France with her parents. Chantilly, a direct descendant of Stephanie, could somehow see Stephanie in the afterlife, crying to herself on her bed. They developed a supernatural bond and became friends playing for days, but after telling her parents and insisting Stephanie is a real person, they were worried and freaked out about her mental health, leaving the castle never to return.
Unable to forget, Chantilly became obsessed and unwavering on her experience, which lead to years of Psychiatric care made worse by her sadistic non understanding father. 10 years later, still on anti-psychotic tablets, a fragile Chantilly returns to a broken home. She stumbles across a TV show called 'The Haunted' after applying to a call out for special cases. They contact her and Eugene the presenter convinces Chantilly that they can help prove Stephanie the Ghost exists at the castle. But, Eugene is a fake, and stages the paranormal activities on his shows for ratings to gain a Netflix special, with the help of Matt the Cameraman who has a stutter and Serena the Goth girl.
The Haunted team get their chance to shoot the 30th episode of 'The Haunted' when Chantilly overhears her mum talking on the phone about selling the castle on the upcoming weekend. Eugene was the one pretending to be the buyer all along, capitalizing on Chantilly's insecurities. Desperate and pressured they start their road trip when she decides to run away with The Haunted team, beginning the episode on the ferry ride over. As they arrive at Lanquetot castle they are greeted by the caretakers. A startled Mr Pillpot immediately wants them to leave. Chantilly lies that her Mum is aware of them being there so a caring and supportive Mrs Pillpot welcomes them all in.
They step inside the castle and Serena is antagonistic towards Chantilly, taunting her to stay in the most haunted room in the house. They all check out their rooms before dinner and Serena gets a nasty shock. Listening to music, a loud thud presents itself at the bedroom door, and then louder reverberating thuds. She gets up and the door slams into her head. Bleeding, furious, Serena makes a scene at the dinner table blaming Chantilly, but it wasn't her, and now she turns her attention to Matt. Whilst they argue around the dinner table, we can hear arguing upstairs. It's the Ghosts, Stephanie and Rene. They finish up then Matt and Eugene sets up a seance with in the master bedroom. They use fake ghost activity props, and EVP equipment top go off when the fake stuff happens. Chantilly comes to to tell them marshmallows are ready and Mr Pillpot tells the tale around the fire of 400 years ago in Lanquetot castle with Stephanie, Rene and The Duke.
The clock strikes midnight and the team gather in the master bedroom for the seance. As the seance begins, somehow they open a portal to The Duke, and the Duke takes over the seance, making the EVP equipment go mental and the ghosts sense something is wrong so check it out. The Duke sends a message 'T-R-E-A-S-U-R-E'. Rene urgently tries to stop the seance upon fear of the Duke returning. With the help of Stephanie, they possess Matt and Chantilly but Rene takes over Chantilly's body, and starts groping her/himself. Stephanie/Matt resents his actions and they argue. Serena doesn't hesitate and attacks them both with a Taser forcing their spirits out of their bodies. Matt comes into consciousness without his stutter, and are all told to go to bed by Mr Pillpot.
Stephanie and Rene continue the argument in the library about Rene's behavior, but they both agree the bigger problem is how The Duke was able to contact The Haunted team through the Séance. Next door in the kitchen they overhear Mrs Pillpot tell Mr Pillpot about how she had hidden away a gypsy spells book from Stephanie many years before. This might have the solution to getting rid of the Ghosts but also something the ghosts could use for their own benefit. Stephanie and Rene are shocked of this revelation and leads to a change in their plans...
It's breakfast time, and the team are watching the go pro footage of the seance, possession and Taser attack. Chantilly is having a hard time now knowing ghosts are real after her years in an asylum. She goes out for a walk and Matt joins her. Chantilly is angry at Matt for assisting the TV fraud Eugene, but is forgiven after promising to never lie to her again. They develop a trusting sweetheart bond. Chantilly wants to understand and communicate with Stephanie the reasons about their connection, since she can feel her presence when she is near.
Meanwhile, Eugene and Serena are setting up the EVP and Infrared camera equipment. Serena sparks up a joint and they get to know each other. Eugene lets his guard down and admits to being a fraud whilst Serena admits to her deepest darkest secret and why she is really there. They conspire to secretly distract Chantilly and Matt to find the treasure without them knowing. Stephanie and Rene are there getting high on the joint that Serena is smoking, as they watch them set up their EVP equipment, and the smoke allows them to feel human. Rene is ogling Serena whilst Stephanie is listening to the conversation and knows they are talking about looking for the Duke. Stephanie get's angry because Rene is not paying any attention, he gets paranoid which results in him getting up and knocking the joint out of Serena's hand and accidentally hurting her leg. They move into the library, where Rene reacts at Stephanie in a paranoid fit. "your dead, you'll never have children", in frustration to the situation, Stephanie gets upset and leaves.
Meanwhile, Mrs Pillpot is serving dinner as Matt and Chantilly gleefully comes in. Eugene instantly snaps at Matt and Chantilly since they've been away for hours, and missed the ghost attack. Chantilly shouts back at Eugene for being a fake, and how he doesn't care about anyone else. She feels more empowered from her newfound knowledge of ghosts. Rene comes in guns blazing smashing the dishes, thinking this will scare them off, but it has the opposite effect. The team unite, except for Matt who wants to go home afterwards but Chantilly puts faith back into Matt which empowers him.
They go down to the basement where they have set up the kit. Eugene is explaining to the audience how the EVP recorders work, being filmed on infrared. Eugene and Serena switch the channel, instantly hearing the muttering of the word 'treasure'. Eugene decides they should split up to cover more ground. Serena opts to go with Chantilly and listen to the portable EVPs, whilst Eugene and Matt go off in another direction in the tunnels. This is when Eugene stumbles upon the box and thinks its treasure, he was tricked by the Duke. He opens the lock and chain which releases the duke and sprays him with ectoplasm. The Duke is unleashed in the tunnels, and rushes past Chantilly and Serena pushing them to the ground. He heads straight for Stephanie and Rene to capture Stephanie and kill Rene. They barely acknowledge him due to arguing but tries to put Stephanie in the box. Rene for the first time actually pushes Stephanie out of the way, and sacrifices himself to the box. Rene tells Stephanie to run, and The Duke swears his vengeance on all within the castle until Stephanie is caught.
Matt comes in carrying Eugene who is catatonic with the girls returning victorious, hearing voices on their EVP, it was Stephanie and Rene talking about the book and the rings in the garden. Eugene projectile vomits all over Chantilly and Mrs Pillpot, then everyone is asked to go to bed. Matt opts to look after Eugene, little do they know the Duke is out for vengeance. The clock chimes 12am and Chantilly goes for a bath. When she is washing her hair under the water she comes back up and the water is frozen, she can't get out. All she can see is the duke looking down at her until she drowns, but is mysteriously she is lifted out of the water and resuscitated...
It's 2am and Serena is asleep having a sexy dream when something enters the room, it nears closer under the sheets to Serena. She wakes up looking straight in the face of the Duke. He grabs her by the throat so she can't scream, it looks like he is choking or raping her, until she is unconscious. Mr Pillpot hears something and gets up to investigate the noise, muttering under his breath. "bloody ghosts, bloody kids". As he's walking down the hall with his lantern a big gust of wind comes past and he gets cut on the arm, and he gets cut again and again. He gasps and grabs the sword from the knight's Armour. "I'm not scared of you. come on you bastards. I'll take you". He looses a hand, then Mr Pillpot is on his knee's, grasping his arm. In the silhouette, his sword is lifted from the floor, and thrust into Mr Pillpot's chest like a kebab.
When Chantilly now opens her eyes, Stephanie is sitting beside her holding her hand "do you remember me darling", Chantilly responds with ore and shock. Stephanie asks for help to try save Rene from the box and recapture the Duke by initiating a ceremony and casting a spell from the gypsy spell book. Matt is in the study caring for Eugene and filming the situation when Chantilly bursts in the door. She introduces Stephanie to Matt just as Mrs Pillpot walks in the door and faints. Mrs Pillpot recovers and they discuss going to graves to find Stephanie and Rene's corpses and find the magical rings to complete the ceremony. While Matt digs the grave Serena appears from the darkness holding a gun delirious and confused and demanding answers. After seeing Stephanie with them, she becomes violent and shoots Stephanie. Mrs Pillpot explains their plan to her and she calms down. They head back to the library to get the book and find the box to complete the ceremony.
Stephanie suspects The Duke has hidden 'The Holder' in the secret room, where they initiate the Ceremony. Meanwhile Matt has disappeared. Chantilly coordinates Matt to draw the floor pentagrams, and set up the EVP, Infrared and camera kit. Just before they start, a possessed Eugene appears speaking in the voice of a demonic Duke and attempts to kill Matt, but in a struggle Matt kicks Eugene off of him and impales him on some spikes on the wall. He dies horribly with Eugene looking like what have you done, Matt is sad that he just killed his best friend. Stephanie appears, and Serena senses something is not right. Stephanie starts performing the ceremony and she starts reading the words from a summoning spell. She calls for the Duke, who appears bound and can't move. She then performs an entrapment spell. The Duke appears, looking double crossed and sad, "my love" he says, like Stephanie is the bad guy, and the box is opened.
When he disappears into the box, Rene comes out of the box, he floats as a ghost happily, but an atmospheric tone changes, Stephanie starts getting angrier, and more evil so to speak, her voice is changing, her color is changing, and she starts reciting another spell which is a possession spell. This traps Matt and Chantilly to their spots in the pentagram. WHOOOM, Matt is now a ghost, and Rene takes over Matt's body. Stephanie shouts "take the book" Serena tries to stop them again with the Taser and get blasted across the room, in an apparently fatal blow. Matt reads the possession spell, and WHOOM, Stephanie has taken over Chantilly's body. Matt and Chantilly are now ghosts bound to the castle, whilst Stephanie and Rene step into the middle of the circle and lovingly embrace.
Now it's Sunrise, they are walking along the shoreline on a lake. There is a flashback of the conspiracy, of them plotting the whole thing from the beginning. Rene throws the holder into the lake and Steph says "why did you do that!?" he says "trust me no one will find it". Steph is annoyed and confused. Meanwhile the mum arrives with the dad at the castle. The mum discovers Mrs Pillpot kneeling in front of Mr Pillpot inside the castle, covered in blood. The mum runs screaming and frantic out of the house, and bumps into Chantilly and Matt talking to the dad. Freaking out, she pushes them into the car. They jump in the car and Matt is speaking in a French accent. The mum is asking questions and we can see the ghost of Matt and Chantilly in the castle banging at the window. Chantilly jumps forward in the car attacking them. The car swerves off the road and stops.
Mrs Pillpot has been arrested for the murders, because she is the only one left there, and is in jail. She has been in jail for approximately 9 months, and within these 9 months she has written a best seller, called the Haunting of Lanquetot, which has sold 2 million copies. She is being interviewed by the new Haunted team to get to the bottom of Eugene's death and the castle. Mrs Pillpot is asked about whether she killed Mr Pillpot, and she goes from her sweet little self into a raging maniac, jumping across the table trying to choke him out. Cut the cameras. Serena is in another interview room being interviewed, and is pregnant.
Around a pristine lake, two young men are sitting around a campfire cooking beans for breakfast whilst another young man is trying to catch a fish. The two men get up and walk over to see Shane struggling with his line. Will grabs the net and gets close to the waters edge, a box appears and the hook is stuck on a chain. They pull the box up to shore and Shane smashes at the lock until it opens, a red mist comes out the Duke has been released and we hear the screams of three young men.
