During the 1971 Indo-Pak War, twelve IAF Pilots were taken prisoners of war (POWs) by the Pakistan Air Force, and spent around a year in captivity. Eventually, they escaped from the Provost Camp of the PAF (located in Rawalpindi) to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, travelling a total of 300 km by foot and bus before arriving at Torkham.
