The film is set in 1972. Jacqueline is 13 years old and a talented athlete in a Leicester school preparing for an athletics meet in a months time. She wants to become an adult before the meet, having difficulties in relationships with her single mother Vivienne, who refuses to show her daughter a photo of her black father and has problems committing to her lover Vic.—Anonymous

The pressures of growing-up as the child of a single parent in Leicester in 1972 prove to be too much for thirteen year old talented athlete Jack. As she struggles to prepare for the biggest test of her athletic ability in a few weeks time she is continually diverted by other distractions in her life. Her neurotic mother Vivienne is struggling to commit to a relationship with her new boyfriend Vic. Her best friend Maxine taunts her about sex and wants to organize a tryst with some local boys. School wants her to do other things besides sport and she, herself, is also desperate to discover the joys of womanhood but without any real understanding of the potential consequences.
