The 5th Sun is the story of three Italian filmmakers attempting to film a documentary on Wanderlust, the eternal need to travel and to feel like a vagabond. They decide to follow Panu, a Finnish traveler, on a road trip from Helsinki (Finland) to Cairns (Australia), chasing a full solar eclipse. They start their journey by land, without a plan, letting Panu wander towards Australia. A week before the eclipse something goes wrong, but what seems to be the failure of the documentary turns out to be its only possible ending. The meta-narrative of The 5th Sun is the final twist for the resolution of the documentary.

There are many travel documentaries but how many documentaries about the traveler? Is the travelling a form of vagrancy or is it more of an inner journey that completes you when you finally reach the end of the road? These are some of the questions pondered on this documentary about the Wanderlust, the irresistible desire to wander the world which for someone is a syndrome to be found in the DRD4 gene, for others the gift of those born to explore. That's how the directors decide to follow Panu, a Finnish traveler, in a road trip from Finland to Australia to witness a full solar eclipse. Panu is an ex fire-fighter and he has been traveling non stop for five years. When a strong impulse to live his life in a different way took over, he decided to quit his job and start living out of his savings. Since then he was going back home only to take off again. A week from the eclipse something goes wrong and the directors find themselves having to manage the plot twist. The Fifth Sun is a glimpse into a lifestyle where your whole life fits into a backpack, trying to make you consider your own ideas about freedom.—Coldfocus
