On an isolated English farm in 1657, Fanny (Peake) lives a quiet life with her oppressive husband John (Dance) and their young son. One day their life is rocked with the arrival of young couple Thomas (Fox) and Rebecca (Reynolds) who claim to have been robbed and need a place to stay. But are these strangers really who they say they are?

England, 1657: the time of Oliver Cromwell's civil and religious wars. The married couple John and Fanny Lye, devout Puritans, live on a remote farm in Shropshire when a naked young couple suddenly breaks into their home. The uninvited guests turn out to be "Ranter" - members of a small pantheistic religious group that particularly rejects the concept of sin - and are on the run from a sheriff who has caused a bloodbath among their brothers and sisters in faith. Against John's resistance, Fanny insists on tending to the wounds of the two strangers and offering them protection. However, Thomas and Rebecca quickly shake up the peace in the house, as their religious views and their free and cheerful interaction arouse the displeasure of the master of the house. Fanny, on the other hand, feels that something may be missing from her life so far. The battle for religious sovereignty quickly turns into a brutal struggle for Fanny's body and soul, all the more so when the sheriff is able to follow the trail of the fugitives back to the Lyes' farm.—Arte
