A revered director with an obscure style, Rei Maruwa, has gone missing during the production of his latest animated feature, Talking Head. With the deadline approaching and next to no progress made, the producer calls in a "shadow director" with the ability to mimic any director's style. Arriving at the studio, he begins meeting with the eccentric crew members in order to understand the project, but soon they begin dying in the same order that he met up with them.

It is nearly time for the debut of the most anticipated animé movie of the year, "Talking Head", but there seems to be a few minor hitches: the director of the film has vanished and the project isn't even started to date. Determined to meet their deadline, the studio brings in a "migrant technical director" to take over for the lost director. His job - to perceive the former director's true vision and lead a very outlandish staff in the making of the movie. But something is afoot than just slumping deadlines as one by one, the staff members end up killed and it's a matter of time before the new director would be next. Now he must play the role of investigator, as well as director, in a realm where imagination and realism seem to be combining into a particular malevolent world.
