Roo and Barney come to Melbourne for their annual break from cane-cutting work. For sixteen years they've spent the "lay off," at a run-down boarding house in Carlton and reunited with Olive, the daughter of the owner. This year there is another resident, Pearl, wary of another attachment. However what starts out as a joyful reunion, and budding romance - ends disaster.
