Synopsis

After 75 years of India's independence, there are still no basic educational facilities in the villages, because of which talented students with exemplary potential are deprived of education. SUMI is a story of a 13-year-old girl 'Sumati', who is very sharp and academically gifted. She wants to study in the neighboring village school for her eighth-grade education. As the neighboring village, 'Mohammad Wadi', is far from her village, she needs a bicycle to travel to make it that far on time. As her family does not have the financial strength to give her the bicycle as her father, 'Vasant', is a daily wage worker at a stone quarry, and her mother is a homemaker. Despite the struggles, Sumi is very adamant about going to Mohammad Wadi as she is committed to going to school, completing her education, and becoming a Doctor. Sumi befriends a Boy named 'Chinmay' and asks him to teach her to ride a bicycle. She learns how to ride it ambitiously. Meanwhile, her father manages somehow to give her pocket money so that she saves up enough to purchase a bicycle. But fate has something else in store for her, and all her saved-up money gets stolen. Sumi's father loses his job after an incident at work; now she has to start again from scratch. Sumi loses all hope of ever going to school but Chinmay motivates her to not give up on her dreams. After a while, Sumi's father leaves for the city to find a new job, and her mother also starts a small venture to support her dreams.Will this little girl's ambition ease her struggles?
