Synopsis

In a remote village in Semarang Regency in 1948, there lived Soedjiman and Sulastri, a wealthy couple who owned a corn plantation and had been married for 11 years but had not yet been blessed with children. Sulastri was desperate, especially since Soedjiman intended to remarry if Sulastri did not get pregnant this year. In such a desperate situation, Sulastri went to a shaman and made a pact with the devil so that she could have children. The pact had a condition that "Sulastri would get pregnant and give birth to twins. One would be beautiful and kind, the other would be ugly and naughty. Sulatri and her husband must take good care of them until they are 10 years old. After that, the ugly and naughty child will be taken by the devil and they will be able to live happily. But if they do not take good care of them, bad things will happen to their family. Every year it will get worse." Sulastri agreed to the condition and she became pregnant with twins. But when the children were born, Soedjiman killed the child who was born ugly and deformed. As a result, Sulastri failed to fulfill the devil's requirement to take care of one of her children until she was 10 years old. While her other child was named Kumala. Kumala grew up to be a beautiful, gentle, and kind child. But her physical condition was disabled and she also seemed to be mentally retarded. She also often got angry. Soedjiman blamed Sulastri for Kumala's condition. Soedjiman and Sulastri were so stressed with Kumala. They tied Kumala up and treated her roughly. Kumala also received bad treatment from the people in the village. Kumala could not fight back and only cried. Until one day, the figure of Sumala, Kumala's twin who had died, came and she made calculations to the people who had hurt Kumala. Lives and blood were at stake.
