For Ursula Gothe, the wife of the aspiring engineer Dr. Richard Gothe, life in the post-war period is finally back on track. That changes when she rediscovers her daughter Martina, who she thought was dead, in a wanted ad.

The time after the war is hard, but luckily hunger and deprivation are a thing of the past for Ursula Gothe. Her husband Richard, an aspiring engineer, offers her a luxurious life with her own housekeeper. Ursula has a small son whom she loves. But her orderly life is suddenly shaken when she discovers a girl's wanted ad in a magazine. The "search child 312" is her daughter Martina, from whom she was separated while fleeing the East seven years ago - and who she previously believed to be dead. That's why she never told Richard that she was in Russia Fallen officer Achim Lenau already had a child. But now her longing for Martina, who has been placed in a home, is great. But Ursula is also afraid of jeopardizing her marriage by confessing to her illegitimate child. When she finally tells her husband, he feels betrayed and shows little understanding. Richard is about to receive his longed-for promotion to factory director and wants to save face in front of his boss Lohmann. So he forces Ursula not to do anything. Only when his sister Johanna persuades him is Richard ready to adopt the child. Since a second woman now claims that Martina is her daughter, the question of motherhood has to be decided in court. In this difficult situation, Achim, who was believed to be dead, unexpectedly returns from Russian captivity.
