Ten teams compete in a variety of events with the final two aiming to Storm the Castle for a chance to win $15,000
Storm the Castle was the second American adaptation of Takeshi's Castle following King of the Mountain (1990). Filmed at Universal Studios this lone 1 hour pilot episode featured ten family teams of five competing in nine different events such as Devil's Domain, Mud Bath Math, Stepping Stones, and The Gauntlet while being chased and/or taunted by various characters referred to as Gremlins. Among them included Beetlejuice, Dracula, the Bride of Frankenstein, and Commander Bruce. The two teams that scored the most points moved on to the final Storm the Castle event with the winners receiving $15,000.
The episode began with a quick recap of the initial 30 families competing in a game where they had to scale a wall and get into a large pool of muddy water to search for tennis balls. The first 10 families to collect 14 balls moved on to the main competition.
Event 1: Devil's Domain - A honeycomb maze patrolled by Beetlejuice and Commander Bruce. One member of each family would venture in and try to find the exit with a pad to land on for 10 points. If the contestant ran into the Gremlins (which was almost immediate), they'd get chased around and guided to one of the outer doors to be tossed into the water.
Event 2: Beach Boys 'n' Gals - Each contestant gets on a rotating surfboard. Jump over a worm, duck under a dolphin, cross the platform containing Beetlejuice and the twins (who act as a distraction), get back on the board to duck under the second dolphin and reach the goal platform for 10 points. Fall off and you land in the water.
Event 3: Human Bowling - 10 contestants draw playing cards from A-10 to determine which pin they're placed in (and tied at the ankles). Sheriff Joe Bob and Tanakas roll a giant ball down towards the pins. Every contestant standing receives 5 points.
Event 4: Mud Bath Math - Each contestant sits on a moving bucket going down a track passing a math question. Give the right answer to the twins at the bottom for 10 points, or they'll dump you in the dirty water pool below.
Event 5: Family Togetherness - Two contestants from each family have to cross a series of teeter-totters set up in the water. Reach the end to score 5 points each.
Event 6: Stepping Stones - This game was featured in highlights. There are several stones set up in the dirty water. Some are solid and others are loose. The contestants have to cross to the other side to score 40 points.
Event 7: The Spinning Mushroom - Contestants have to hold on to a rope wrapped around a giant mushroom. They spin down over the water and time slipping off the mushroom to land on a pad for 20 points.
Event 8: The Gauntlet - An obstacle course half the length of a football field. Contestants have 45 seconds to reach the goal traversing across beds of foam and colored balls, and avoiding a large motorized turnstile. All awhile having water, ping-pong balls, and giant balls thrown at them. Swing across the mud pit at the end to score 10 points. If you fail at the very end Commander Bruce will throw you into the mud.
Event 9: Dunk Your Parents - The four families with the most points took part here with a parent sitting on a bucket with their child in front of 4 levers. Each lever is randomized with three earning 5-10-15 points each in succession. Along with the points Dracula would dump a bucket of water on the parent. Bride of Frankenstein would smear cream in the parent's face, and another would simply set off a horn sound. The fourth lever would trigger Commander Bruce to hit a gong with a large mallet with a stage hand mechanically lifting the bucket to have the parent hurdle down and be launched into the water. This lever ended the family's turn. The two families with the most points at the end here moved on to the final game.
Event 10: Storm the Castle - A large course out on the water in front of the castle with 12 large purple balloons and 12 pink. Four family members take part with three from each team piloting bumper boats. Around the bend Gremlins are stationed on a platform armed with water balloons. Once in the field area the contestants have to pop their 12 balloons using plastic swords. When the first 11 on the water are popped a family member needs to tag the youngest who is stationed near the castle walls with a final balloon hanging above them. The winners get $15,000 while the runner ups get $5,000.
Notes - 1) As this was a 1 hour program showing the events that spanned several hours in one day some games didn't feature all the contestants, and only some highlights for Stepping Stones were shown. 2) They did a good job of replicating the Takeshi's Castle events even down to using some of the same names and music. However the rules were different, and there were a few alterations. 3) Unlike the Takeshi Gauntlet where landing in the water at any time ended your turn, most Storm contestants landed in the muddy water during the final swing where they were still allowed to climb up to the goal. 4) The Dunk Your Parents counterpart on Takeshi's Castle was called 'Stab and Be Stabbed', and was designed more like the children's game Pop-Up Pirate.
