Synopsis

A former thief, Will Montgomery (Nicolas Cage), is released from prison after 8 yrs for a bank robbery of $10 million. He decides to visit his estranged daughter, Alison, whom he hasn't seen in eight years. But then an old partner Vincent (Josh Lucas), who many believed to have died, kidnaps Alison and locks her in the trunk of his medallion taxicab and demands ransom: the $10 million he believes Will still has. Since he doesn't, Will has to rob another bank as the detective that put him away Tim Harleno (Danny Huston) tracks him down again.

One aspect of the original heist was that the entire operation was under surveillance by the FBI even before Will came anywhere near the premises. In addition to Josh, Will had partners Riley (Malin Akermaan) (on the getaway vehicle) & Hoyt (electronics). During a scuffle while exiting the bank, Vincent accidentally shoots himself while arguing with Will. Will rescues Vincent & puts him in the van & goes back to get the money, but Hoyt decides to drive away. Will hijacks a cop car & tries to get away but Tim tracks him down & arrests him. But the FBI don't recover the money.

Upon release, Tim meets Will & wants him to retrieve the $ 10 MM for him. Will meets Alison who is not very happy to see him. Then he meets Riley who thanks Will for not ratting out the entire gang & only taking the rap himself. Vincent calls Will after kidnapping Alison & demands the money. Will says that he burnt the money to save himself another 10 years in jail. But when Vincent threatens to kill Alison, Will asks for 12 hours to come up with the cash.

Will knows that he is being tracked by FBI, he loses the agents & meets Tim in his office & asks his help against Vincent, but Tim is convinced that Vincent is dead, as there were Vincent's fingerprints on a dead, charred & cut up body that police found (the prints were from Vincent's severed leg, that was amputated after he shot himself). Vincent planned his own death to evade the loan sharks that were after him.

Will hacks the FBI computer & traces Hyot. Hyot admits that he is working for Vincent & that he is driving around Alison in the trunk of his cab. Will has to escape the feds approaching Hyot's apartment. Meanwhile Alison escapes after Vincent is pulled over by a cop for a broken taillight (Alison cut the wires). Vincent goes after her after shooting the cop. Vincent catches Alison & this time drugs her heavily.

Will hijacks another cab & uses GPS to find Vincent's location (as all cabs are tracked via GPS). But when Will tracks it down, he finds that Vincent had paid another driver to use his GPS equipment that day. Thats when FBI catches up with Will. Will again escapes & admits to Vincent on phone that he does not have the money & that he will rob another bank to get him the cash. The FBI talks to the cab company & realizes Vincent is alive.

Will approaches Riley with a plan to rob the bank again & this time walk out with $ 100 MM in gold bars. Riley agrees to help only because Alison is in danger. Riley & Will use the underground sewers to reach underneath the bank vault & Will uses a concrete busting blowtorch to eat through the concrete floor & then uses the same blow torch to melt the solid gold bars that melt & drip through the hole that Will just dug.

The alarms go off after 5 mins, & Tim & his team are on their way. The FBI tracks Will & Riley leaving in their pick-up truck & boarding a ferry across the New Orleans River, but Tim instructs the team to wait till Will is off the ferry. But when they finally stop the truck, there is no Will & no gold, only Riley.

Vincent calls Will to an abandoned amusement park outside town for the exchange. The FBI also figure out the location & go after both Will & Vincent. Vincent wants to kill Alison even after Will hands over the gold to him. Vincent pours gasoline all over the cab & sets it on fire, Will attacks Vincent, who gets set on fire himself. Will drives the car into water & rescues Alison. Vincent attacks from behind, but this time Will kills Vincent. Will is seriously wounded, but the feds arrive & attend to his injuries.

All the gold is recovered except 10 pounds that Will finds at the back of Riley's truck. He knows that the feds & Tim are watching, so he pretends to throw it in the water.
