Synopsis

The main hero, Martin Uhernik is involved in a crime, in the murder of his neighbour Jakob Luzar. The first instance court adjudicated his acquittal since there was lack of sufficient evidence of the murder. As the politicians and the local authorities interfere in the judgement, the prosecution requests a repeated trial before the Higher court. New evidence is found and the Higher court sentenced Uhernik to prison. His wife Ana is accused of taking part in the crime as well. During eight years of imprisonment the family falls apart: the wife passes away, the eight and twelve years old children are left to other people. The locals talk about a presumable killer and indicate a possibility of somebody else's involvement in the crime. In prison, Uhernik writes letters and addresses them to various institutions, even to the marshal's board in Belgrade. He gives proves that he's not the killer and claims the court's decision wasn't right. Uhernik refers to the ruling of the First instance court's judge when he was acquitted for the lack of evidence. It is found that the investigators were very cursory and omitted several relevant evidences during examinations. This is testified by the documents, judges, criminalists, experts, lawyers and locals. Each year Uhernik's correspondence includes more and more proofs to his benefit. After he served his time he returns home. There he wants to begin anew and forget the fatal mistake that led him to prison and marked his life forever. Time passes and it becomes clear that Uhernik was condemned basing on rumours and presumptions. Therefore the falsely accused Uhernik and his lawyer file an appeal to renew the trial. After thirty years of suffering Martin Uhernik experiences a catharsis: Slovenian authorities annul the judgment made in 1974. Uhernik is leaving the court with the judgement of acquittal and the indemnity in his pocket, accompanied by assessment of the minister of justice. Uhernik is confronted with his thoughts: Is it enough for the suffered nonsense? Will the truth about the crime remain unknown? Who's the killer? Where are the apologies of all those who were involved into the trial against him? Uhernik will have to live with these questions forever.By ZDENKO KODRIC
