Mohan attempts to secure a loan from his employer on the occasion of Diwali as well as his Munna, his son's birthday; is not only refused but also fired from his job. He returns home to find his house burning, manages to rescue his son, but succumbs to severe burn injuries. His devastated wife, Kaushalya, rendered homeless, is sexually molested by a wealthy male, and ends up killing him while defending her honor. On the run from the police, she leaves her son with Bhola Bhagat, is subsequently arrested, found guilty, and imprisoned. Years later, her son, now renamed Heera, has grown up, is in love with gorgeous Roopkumari. Both plan to marry soon but the village Jagirdar, Vijay, who lusts after Roopkumari, refuses to permit them until and unless Heera proves that he has one biological parent. With Devi Maa Santoshi's help, Heera locates Kaushalya, who has been discharged from prison due to good behavior, but passes away.
