Jole is a desperate returnee from America, whose world collapsed after his son's unfortunate death. He engaged his daughter Masha with Ivan, neighbor's son Marko, who's in the United States together with his father for seven years already, and where they both earn well. On one stormy night, a young passer-by named Perelja stops by at Jole's house and falls in love with Masha during his stay. Jole does not want to lose the opportunity to stabilize the family: he forbids Masha seeing with the poor guy... in vain. Ivan returns from America, and Masha does not dare to tell her father that she is pregnant.
