Flashbacks profile California motorists involved in a disastrous 39-car smash-up over a holiday weekend.

A disaster movie opening with an enormous multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 in California. After the opening stunt-filled action, a flashback of the crash victims' lives prior to and leading up to the accident. During the Fourth of July weekend, a multi-car pile up takes place on Interstate 5 just outside of San Diego. However, the various stories of some of the victims of the crash are shown, including an elderly couple dealing with the wife's terminal cancer diagnosis, a young man who is smitten with the girlfriend of a cop killer, as well as his partner hunting for them. Also, a middle aged rich woman has a fling with a trucker, who saved her from being raped by a motorcycle gang.
