In the approach to Christmas, divorced Laurel Bishop, the manager of Parks and Recreation in the small New England town of Mission City, has a change to her schedule as Howard, the mayor, has found funds to resurrect what has been the long defunct Christmas parade, the notification of her being the event organizer giving her two weeks from start to finish to get the job done, a promotion to city manager waiting for her on the other side. As the parade will take time away from what were going to be Christmas activities with her only offspring, adolescent daughter Scarlett, Laurel gets the okay from Scarlett to work on the parade, to which she is looking forward in never having seen them when they were previously held. While out for a drive in the country, Laurel and Scarlett spot what would be a perfect centerpiece for the parade, an antique albeit run-down sleigh, Laurel getting the okay from its owner to borrow and fix it. Laurel finds that the sleigh seems to have a mind of its own, moving at its own will. The magic of the sleigh, which may have something to do with its mysterious owner, a jolly, rotund older man with white hair and a bushy beard, seems to push Laurel in the direction of Alex McCord, not only her high school and college sweetheart, but ex-fiancé, that fiancé status changing when they parted after college in he moving to New York City to pursue his dream job. He is back in Mission City solely for the holidays to help his Aunt Audrey sell her antiques store so that she can go into retirement. While there is an undeniable attraction that still exists between them, the question is if the magic of the sleigh can overcome the issues that still exist between them, those that led to their breakup plus the differences in their current situations, which for Laurel is a priority first and foremost on Scarlett and which for Alex is a promotion of his own back in New York City.—Huggo
