An archaeologist is doing her last job with some students in her hometown to prove her father's theory that there would be a colony settled there. The dig, organized under her mentor Tony Markham's auspices, is most promising. Then a recent corpse is found in a dig square: local lush Augie, who vaguely threatened her the evening before. Strange things keep happening, like theft of the map copy, sabotage of the dig site to disable the most crucial dating, fire at the farm house of Emma's host-friend Adelle and theft of her beloved statue. FBI Special Agent Jim Connor can't officially deputize Emma, but she, having studied forensic medicine, and brilliant student Joe prove invaluable in fact.
