Angela tried to commit suicide but survived. She is on life support and her conscience is trapped inside her own mind, in the bitex, a part of the human brain. This is the part that controls both the actions in real world, as well as the aetherial plane of the dead. For her to cross definetly into the afterlife she must travel the wasteland of the bitex to recover memories lost after the shot to the head.
