The contrast between the happy and careless sector of Mexican high society and the oppressed sector of the population is the scenario where Tomas, a ten year-old kid from a wealthy family, discovers a legend that has its roots in his grandfather's estate. Mexico, 2006. Tomas, an eight years old boy, from Mexico's high-society becomes more sensitive to the plight of the oppressed people of México's countryside through questioning everyone and everything in his urge to discover the truth behind the world around him.
The chaos and violence of modern Mexico has already taken away his father and grandfather. Now Tomas will have to deal with Octavio, the opportunist Mexican macho man who has married Tomas mother. Tomas's imagination is in a desperate battle to get over the sadness generated when, as a younger boy, he witnessed Octavio committing a violent act with his nanny.
His father has been murdered, his grandfather kidnaped and killed, so Tomas finds several father figures. In his home city Tomas finds comfort in his uncle Raul, the good-hearted brother of his mother who liberates Tomas thru his advice. Even against his mother's will, every time he can Tomas escapes to see his uncle.
The tedium of over-protection and everyday life routine is interrupted by a trip to his late grandfather's hacienda. Set in the Mexican countryside, it is a magical building from the 16th century filled with history, and fantastical myths.
Efren, the wrangler, is the one who takes Tomas on a journey to find the hidden truth in his traumatic youth. But it's Cayetano, the haciendas night keeper who his grandfather had loved so much, the humble figure with which Tomas identifies the most, spending long hours with him talking about mysterious stories involving the hacienda. The stories awaken Tomas's eager imagination, and he becomes fascinated by one particular story 'The Legend of Cagalar.
Tomas will do whatever it's necessary to discover the true story behind the mysterious legend. However, only a chain of events that take him from adventure to tragedy will bring Tomas closer to discovering the true meaning hidden in Cagalar's legend.
Tomas, goes on a horseback ride with Efren to find a Shaman who has the healing strength of absolute truth. By means of an old traditional ritual the subtle boundaries between myth, truth and lie, are erased in Tomas's consciousness by the old wise Shaman.
His innocent naive rebellion will lead Tomas to witness and be accomplice of a couple tragic acts of murder and suicide.
